Last working meeting conducted in Bydgoszcz (Poland), on 16th to 19th May 201

From 16.05 to 19.05 2012. we hosted a group of teachers from Spain and Finland at our school. This was the last meeting of the Comenius project -School Partnerships launched in September 2010.

The guests arrived to Bydgoszcz on 05/16/2012

17.05.2012r. – The official visit began at the school. After greeting with the head-teacher and teachers, the guests had a chance to watch a puppet show prepared by 4th and 6th graders – “The legend about Lech, Czech and Rus”.

Then, with tears in our eyes we watched a multimedia presentation about the main activities, which were undertaken during the two years of the project.

Then each group presented their homework, which was made by children. It was connected with the Polish legend.

After the coffee break, the guests were shown around the school – they could see the entire building, the sports hall, head-teacher’s office, secretary’s and accountant’s room, and some parts of different lessons.

Then, we saw dancing performances, prepared by dancing team “Echo” and the children from class I b.

The teachers also visited the building, where younger kids (7-9 years old) have their lessons and Kindergarten No 66.

The volleyball match between the Comenius team and the students from the sport class raised a lot of emotion. The result was: 2-1 for teachers.

After dinner we went to Lubostroń, where a lot of surprises were waiting for our guests: theatrical lesson, a concert for cello and piano, visiting the palace, carriage ride through the park, dinner. Everyone was impressed with charming place.

That day we went on a trip to Biskupin and Venice. The guests had the opportunity to learn about our oldest history. They could see some exhibits of old times, and the settlement - Biskupin, which made a great impression on them.

Venice is a place, which brought together the biggest collection of steam locomotives in the open air. All the exhibits were viewed with great interest.

After returning to Bydgoszcz there was a further string of surprises. This time, teachers had the opportunity to see our city from a different perspective. They took part in the “Sunflower” (Słonecznik) boat trip on the river Brda. The good weather, lush greenery and beautiful sun, stressed the beauty of the city.

The evening was favorably ended in the pancake restaurant "Moon".

And then there was the time to say goodbye. It was difficult for all of us to hide our emotions and tears. These two years of work have made us great pleasure and provided us many positive emotions. We are richer in many new experience. It was difficult to say goodbye but we hope to meet again.

6 graders from Poland and "The Little Prince"

„Little Prince” by 6th graders.

First the students read the book "Little Prince" in Polish and then they did various tasks in English, based on the story.

The culmination of the work was to make a mock-up of planets in the solar system and Little Prince’s planets.

The legend about Lech, Czech and Rus

"The legend about Lech, Czech and Rus" is the book we are working on this time. It is about the beginnings of the Polish country. More you can find in the summary. Your task is to make posters for the book and bring five with you.

Long, long ago, in the first centuries of our era (around the same time when Barbarian tribes invaded Europe from the east and the Roman Empire had already perished) a great group of people known as the Slavs, occupied huge areas between two rivers the Dnieper and the Oder.

For many years they had been content in their villages, but the families grew larger and they needed more room to live.

Three brothers Lech, Czech and Rus decided to travel in different directions to search for new homes. They rode their horses over mountains and rivers, through forests and wild country. There was no one to be found anywhere, not a town or tiny village.

Behind them peasants led the cattle, women and children went on the carts. They were exhausted and searched for the place where they could settle with their people. After a long journey they stopped at the lake, on a beautiful large meadow. It was a sunny summer evening. The three brothers decided to have a rest under an old oak tree.

Suddenly the brothers heard some noise. Lech raised his head and saw a white eagle that was flying to its nest.

"Here is where we will stay!" declared Lech. "Here is our new home, and we will call this place GNIEZNO ..." (the eagle's nest).

He and his people built many houses and it became the centre of his territory. They called themselves Polonians, which means "People of the Field". They made a banner with a white eagle on a red field and and it became the national emblem of Poland. Gniezno, in turn, became later the first historical capital of Poland.

Meanwhile, Czech and Rus also settled in places they liked with their parts of the tribe. From these two brothers came the two peoples that neighbour Poland. The Czechs to the south and the Russians to the East.

If you ever happen to visit a certain part of Wielkopolska (Grand Poland), you will find, in a forest, three grand old trees given the names Lech, Czech and Rus, to honour the heroic brothers who planted the seeds of three proud Slavic peoples.
