Play about Emil Svensson


Finnish 2nd grade pupils read a book about Emil Svensson and his pranks, written by Astrid Lindgren. Emil Svensson lives with his family on a farm called Katthult. He has fair hair and blue eyes and looks like an angel but is not. The 2nd grade pupils took some clothes from their homes and they imagined themselves as Emil or his sister Iida.

Comenius visit to Ristijärvi March 16-20 2011

On Thursday morning we had welcoming ceremony in the school festival hall. The pupils gave their performances on the Kalevala and Finnish simpletons stories and the school band played some finnish music. The Polish and Spanish quests give also their colorful presentations of their beautiful hometowns and own schools, and they were given each T-shirt with a logo as a welcoming gift. 


After a snack there were visits to the classes in the school. Before lunch we visited the Virtaala hall where a pupper theather play "Canine Kalevala" by the Kajaani City Theatre took place. After lunch we had ice-skating and the ice kolkka -game in the school ice rink. During the afternoon we also had visits to the local kindergarten, healt centre, churh and school museum. After having good time out doors we prepared and enjoyed together traditional and contemporary Finnish meals in the home economics at the school. Then we visited the Kaukametsä Congress and Cultural Centre in Kajaani and viewed exhibitions on the life of Elias Lönnrot, the compiler of the Kalavala from folklore poems, and on illustrations and graphies of two Finnish artists.


On Friday morning we had out doors activities at the Ukkohalla Ski Resort in Hyrynsalmi, a neightbouring municipality to Ristijärvi. We did cross-country skiig, downhill skiing, and sled hill sliding. We also had an oppurtunity to take a ride on a rendeer sleight. In the afternoon we returned to Ristijärvi and visited the Canine Kalevala exhibition at the local library. In the evening we spend time in Kajaani. We saw a theatrical performance at the Generaattori Stage and had dinner at the Restaurant Tolero.




On Saturday we had a trip to Kuhmo, an eastern municipality bordering Russia. We visited the Petola Nature Centre, which offered information on Finland`s large carnivores- brown bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine, and the Kalevala village, where we had lunch. we did some snowshoe trekking and ice fishing on lake Oulujärvi. After a busy day, we had sauna at the hotel in Kajaani in the evening.



On Sunday morning we visited the Kajaani Art Museum and had lunch at the Restaurant Rosso, before our quests left to their own countries.
